Six stories by the bad boy of Belgian Surrealism, obsessive, upsetting, humorous. Marcel Mariën is one of the most important figures from the Belgian Surrealist movement. Born in 1920, his participation with the Surrealists began in 1937. A remarkably prolific object-maker, sculptor, photographer and author, he has also edited many of the most important reviews to appear in Belgium: Le Ciel Bleu (1945), Le Miroir unfidèle (1946-7), Le Lèvres Nues (1954-the present day), Le Fait Accompli (1968-1977). His book L’Activite Surréaliste en Belgique is the last word on the subject. Recently his short story collections have gained him a wide and enthusiastic readership in France and Belgium, partly as a result of the scandal which accompanied the publication of his autobiography Le Radeau de la Mémoire in 1983. |
